SQLPro was $79.99 as of this writing – This is a one time, buy it, it’s yours price, and it’s very competitive vs other tools that also offer the ability to connect to and work with Microsoft SQL server. (There are versions for MySQL, SQLite, and Postgres, as well as a ‘studio’ version that supports multiple types of databases) SQLPro is a pretty stable product, and that’s no surprise, as the developer has been making database tools for quite some time now. The tool has code completion, the ability to drag and drop field and table names from the navigation pane on the left to the editor, some nice features like the ability to auto indent sql code, and the ability to run multiple queries (separated by semicolons ) and display the results from each one in the results window, just like MS SQL Management Studio does! I had no trouble connecting to PaaS SQL in Azure, and was able to do all the things I’d normally want to do.

This tool is a native mac application (not a java port) and it shows: the app is fast, responsive, and looks like a mac app, supporting newer features such as the mac’s special full screen mode. Of the paid options, the best bang for the buck for me was Hankinsoft’s SQLPro for MSSQL. The latest installer occupies 19.1 MB on disk. One wouldn’t even connect, and one connected but I ran into problems enumerating fields. Our software library provides a free download of SQLPro for MSSQL 2022.46 for Mac.

The free options were kinda 1990’s java ugly. SQLPro for MSSQL for Mac (MSSQL) v2022.70 19.41 MB 100 MacOS 12.0.x,MacOS 11. I tried a handful of options including some open source cross platform tools, some paid cross platform tools and a mac only gem called SQLPRO for MSSQL.

If you’re using Azure, you simply need to update our firewall rules to allow access for your local IP address and connection to the Azure SQL database is simple after this update, (and will need to be updated each time, if you’re like me and change locations, (and IP addresses each time.)) Its an easy to configure and use, 12Mb query interface, (also available from the App Store) that was created for SQL Server users that find themselves on Mac. I figured I wasn’t the only one and did some research, locating SQLPro for MSSQL from Hankinsoft. With this change, I found myself limited to VMs running on my Mac with SQL Server, then I was working with Azure and it seemed like a lot of extra “weight” to just have access to a few tools.

Please ensure that your server is a Microsoft SQL server. I recently switched to a Mac after decades use with PCs. SQLPro for MSSQL (was SQL Client) is a lightweight TDS client, allowing quick and simple access to Microsoft SQL servers (sqlserver), including those hosted in Azure.
